What I did was selection and concentration.

Tofu Terms

• “the top performer in prices” (物価の優等生) : A Japanese saying. Tofu is called this because its price remains relatively stable even during periods of inflation.
• “selection and concentration”: One of a business strategy to narrow down and focus on the diversified business operations that were previously expanded to improve performance.
• “Don’t let tofu travel” (豆腐に旅はさせるな): Tofu should be eaten soon because its deliciousness deteriorates as time elapsed.
• Singin’ in da-di-da ～: Represents the image of singing casually while cooking in the kitchen. Apart from “viva la vida,” the syllables have no lyrical meaning.
• c’est la vie: A French phrase meaning “that’s life.”
• The trumpet-like sound around 0:45: The sound of the horn commonly used by tofu vendors during mobile sales. The pitch is slightly off, but it’s typically like this with minor inaccuracies. Apparently some tofu vendors play it with accurate pitch (citation needed).

Description

The name of this song is somewhat fool around since I wanted to make a silly title song. But I couldn’t keep silliness so the lyrics have the same feeling like my other songs, bit of sadness.

Background

私は歌詞に何かしらのストーリー性を持たせないと 1 曲保つことができないのでストーリーを作るのですが、 ストーリーが長すぎると歌詞の中に納まらずにものすごく長くなってしまいます。この曲みたいに。

テンポはそこまで早くないのですが喋りかけるように歌い続けるので 何とか 4 分以内には収まっておりますが、ちょっと長いですね。

Story

歌詞を追っていただければおおむねわかっていただけると思っておりますが、 豆腐屋さんがお家を買って子供を見守る話です。

豆腐屋さんはどうやらシングルマザーで生計のためにいろいろ試行錯誤した挙句何とか自分の持ち家を持てるようになり、 持ち家も別に自分のためではなく子供のために建てたという献身的なお話。

※ 献身的だから素晴らしい、とかそういうことを主張したいわけじゃないです。

以下は歌詞を改めて長々と説明しています。

幼少期

あまり豆腐屋の経営が上手くいっていないのか、朝から晩までお店に出ずっぱりです。 子供に食べさせるものもお店のあまりもの。それらを騙し騙し「あなたのためだから」といって食卓に並べます。 子供の方も拒否権は残念ながらないので、イヤイヤながらも食べるしかない。 小さい時こそ一緒にいたいけど生活のために留守になりがちで、たまに近所の人に預かってもらっていたりするけど 本当はそんなのはよくないなと思っています。

ちなみに動画では徐々に画面内のミクさんの距離感が遠くなっていって、これが成長を示しているらしい。(後付け)

偶にお昼から家にいられるときには歌いながら料理をしていました。 いつもその場で適当な歌詞をつけて歌っていますが、楽しそうな感じです。

青年期

いつまでもこの生活を続けるのもどうか、と思ったので何か起死回生の一打を考えています。 色々な方面に多角的に手を伸ばしますがどれも上手くいかず、 結局自分がずっと続けている豆腐をベースにした何かを考えようとします。

そこで思いついたものをスーパーなどの大口顧客に営業しに行っています。 どうやらうまくいったようで、何とか安定した生活基盤を作ることができたようです。

豆腐で稼いだ金で作ったので、豆腐御殿ならぬ、とうふパレスを作ります。 そうは言っても普通の家のようで、名前ほど大きくもないらしいです。 こういうおふざけは普段からするタイプの人のようです。

帰る家ができたから、安心して色んな事にチャレンジしなさいと 胸を張って子供たちに宣言できたようです。 何かを得て、できれば帰ってきて欲しいという気持ち。

独り立ち期

みんな独り立ちしてそれぞれの道を見つけ始めたころ 今のお店はもう歳だし締めよう、と思いました。 自分一人が暮らすくらいであれば、今の貯えと年金で行けるという算段なのかもしれません。 あるいはもう先が長くないことを悟ってそうしたのかもしれません。

家はあるし、お店は別に継がないでいいので 自分で見つけた道を行きなさいと伝えます。

さよなら期

子供たちが自分たちの道を見つけることができたので 悔いなくこの先の道を行くことができそうです。

変わらないものはなく、すべて過ぎ去っていくのが人生。 私も過ぎ去るものの一つなので、気にせずそのまま自分たちの道を進んでいって欲しいな、と言って眠りにつきます。
